Yorkshire Green Fuels Ltd: Hydrogen Generation by Electrolysis
The hydrogen generator kit from Yorkshire Green Fuels Ltd is a simple and
safe way to generate hydrogen for use in your car engine. Its electrolytic
operation using can be summarised as follows:
- The main part of the kit is an electrolytic chamber containing distilled
water with bi-carbonate of soda dissolved in solution.
- Electric current from the car battery passes through the electrolytic
chamber between the supplied metal electrodes.
- The electric current causes an electrochemical reaction which converts
bicarbonate of soda into sodium carbonate (a harmless substance, in
solution) and hydrogen gas.
- As this is a steady process, hydrogen is released at a constant rate and
there will be no sudden pressure build up.
- The hydrogen passes along the exit hose and through the safety valve.
- This hose merges with the air intake system for the engine. We recommend
that the junction is installed by a competent person (see installation
instructions below).
- In the combustion cylinders of the engine, hydrogen takes the
place of up to 25% of the fuel vapour normally present.
- Hydrogen is burnt alongside the traditional carbon fuel, its
emission product is pure water in the form of steam.
- The combustion of hydrogen is environmentally neutral, so the overall
effect is to reduce your engine emissions by a proportion up to 25%.
- The cost of generating the hydrogen is minimal.
- The kit is simpler and safer to operate when wired to the car battery
through the ignition circuit. Hydrogen will then be generated only when the
ignition switch is turned on.
Fitting Instructions for Electrolytic Hydrogen Generation

 |
- ONLY USE BICARBONATE OF SODA
IN THIS MODE
- Set Generator securely in engine away from all heat sources.
- Before fitting lid fill container about 3/4 full with distilled water.
- Add one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda and stir until dissolved.
- Fit lid to generator and attach wires, live to red terminal and earth
to black terminal, the in line fuse is fitted in the live wire near the
power source which needs to be via the ignition to ensure the
generator is switched off when not in use.
- Attach hose to generator then connect to engine by drilling a small
hole into the air intake system after the air filter and close to the
engine but before any turbo charger, feed the hose in and seal with
silicone. Form a loop in the hose below the generator cap and the
input to the engine, into this loop pour a couple of inches of water to
form a water trap in case of a flashback (There is also a check valve
included in the kit)
- A maximum of three tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda can be used with
this generator but care must be taken to avoid overheating so start with one
tablespoon. Check the temperature of the generator by touching the outside
casing which should be hot but not so hot that you can't hold your hand on
it, if it is too hot reduce the amount of bi carbonate of soda and to
increase the heat add bi carbonate of soda one half tablespoon at a time.
- The amount of hydrogen required is between 0.25 and 0.5 litres
per litre of engine therefore a three litre car would use one litre of
hydrogen per minute. Electrolysis using this kit can produce up to 2 litres of
hydrogen per minute per minute.
- WARNING!
The electrolyte produced by the Hydrogen Generator contains traces of Chromium 6 and according to Environmental Services the amount produced is so small that it would pose no threat to health or environment, however it would be prudent to dispose of the electrolyte responsibly and avoid contact with skin.
For more information on Chromium6 please refer to HSE pamphlet INDG346 C15 11/01
